Free School Meals - can you claim?

23rd April 2020

Dear Parents/Carers

In this period of uncertainty; many parents/carers are finding themselves in a difficult financial situation.

If you have been advised to claim Universal Credit due to having no work and no money coming in, you will also be entitled to claim free school meals. Which at the moment may be a big help as it means that from our school, you will receive a weekly food hamper.

We are NOT providing vouchers like some other schools.

If you receive any of the following benefits you are entitled to claim FREE SCHOOL MEALS:

  • Income Support
  • income-based Job Seeker's Allowance
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit with an annual income of less than £16,190, provided you are not receiving Working Tax Credit
  • the ‘Guaranteed’ element of the State Pension Credit
  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Universal Credit, if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)
  • if your child is eligible for free school meals, they’ll continue to receive them until they move to a new stage of school, such as from primary into secondary school

Please note: People receiving Working Tax Credit, regardless of their income level, do not qualify.
