Our Intent

Reading

At Ingram Road we believe that a quality Reading curriculum should develop children’s love of reading and discussion. We have a rigorous and well organised curriculum that provides many purposeful opportunities for reading and discussion. We strive to ensure that all children have access to a wide range of engaging texts to immerse themselves with. Children will build on the knowledge gained through phonics teaching earlier in their school lives through Guided Reading sessions as well as through Love of Reading sessions. Guided Reading sessions focus on the skills required to decode and demonstrate a sound understanding of what has been read. We understand that a range of skills are required for children to have well rounded comprehension skills. We also understand the need for children to be fluent readers and so we strive for children to be heard to read individually on a regular basis throughout their time at school. All staff are trained to consider ways to elicit understanding of pupils when reading individually through a range of question types.

Writing

We understand that to meet the needs of our children in a diverse community we want to provide a range of engaging and exciting writing opportunities. We understand the importance of focusing on the spoken word and language and vocabulary development. We also want to provide opportunities to develop levels of independence in every year group. Our school will provide texts that cover a range of genres, depth of experiences and exposure to range of diverse authors. We intend that all children will have access to the National Curriculum objectives relevant to their age group and/or individual need. Our aim is for children to become independent and effective writers.
